Babu was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India on August 9, 1975. He is the son of the film actor’s father Krishna and his mother Indira Devi. He has two older brothers Ghattamaneni Ramesh Babu and Naresh Vijaya Krishna, and three sisters Priyadarshini, Manjula, and Padmavathi. Mahesh studied at St. Bede’s Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School and then he joined Loyola College.

Mahesh got married to actress Namrata Shirodkar on February 10, 2005, and they have a son Gautham Ghattamaneni and a daughter Sitara Ghattamaneni.
